Katoomba sits at about 1,000 metres, so winters are properly cold. Frosts are regular, snow turns up in some years, and pipes in roof spaces and outside walls are the first to suffer. If a tap runs dry on a freezing morning, see burst and frozen pipes.
Much of the housing is old: federation and interwar weatherboard, brick bungalows and sandstone retaining walls on steep streets. That means galvanised pipes, earthenware drains and hot water units squeezed into odd spaces. Tree roots are a regular cause of blocked sewer lines, especially around the older streets with mature gums and street trees.
Most Katoomba properties are on Sydney Water sewer, so a blockage on your side of the boundary is yours to fix, and one in the main is theirs. We can tell you which it is.
Guesthouses and rentals bring a particular problem: hot water and toilets get used hard, and a failure on a busy weekend is costly. Regular servicing is cheaper than an emergency call.

My pipes freeze in winter. What can I do?
Lag exposed pipes before May, seal draughts under the floor and know where your main tap is. See our burst and frozen pipes page.
Can you work on older Katoomba cottages?
Yes. Older pipework, awkward hot water spaces and earthenware drains are routine for us.
